Meet Staci, one of our ‘18-‘19 Scholars!
“Hello! My name is Staci Batchelor (she/her/hers) and I am a junior majoring in Horticulture and minoring in Sociology and Applied Ecology. I joined Oak Scholars because I was excited that other people within my college were enthusiastic about social justice and advocacy. I thought it would also be a good opportunity for me to better my leadership and building connections with others.
My goals for this year is to being better at putting myself out there and doing the things that in the past I’ve held myself back from doing. One of things being a advocate and leader for social justice which is what I will be doing in Oak Scholars. I also want to try new things that usually make me uncomfortable but would be beneficial experiences such as kick boxing and possibly roller derby.
My plans for after graduation are to move out of North Carolina (hopefully) and work in a job that overlaps Horticulture and Ecology and continue studying sociology. I’m not sure exactly what job I want in horticulture, but I know I want it to be something different such as working with aquariums or unconventional plants. If I continue with my studies in sociology, I would like to concentrate in gender studies and issues in the prison system.
I am excited for the experiences I will have with Oak Scholars this year!”
